Why are people assuming that those of us who like this don't know his history? I know the story and still side with him; I don't believe that the death penalty is ever appropriate and I don't believe in arbitrarily assigning more value to one person's life than another, despite their histories. Being an active part of systematic oppression < having a disease (heroin addiction) and stealing some shit, apparently. Criminals are the product of living in a fucked up system, and it's really easy to demonize them when you'll never know true desperation yourself.
The thing that initially came to my mind as I read this was the 14-year-old shot by a police officer in Cabrini Green a couple years back, for having a BB gun. Yeah, race doesn't play into it at all. You're right.
Beyond all that, a good speech is a good speech regardless of the source.
